Dog Food for Sensitive Stomachs - Family - Pets

Many dog owners today may have a dog that experiences symptoms of a sensitive stomach. Dogs that experience diarrhea, vomiting, have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constant gas, colitis, parasites, and other gastrointestinal or allergy problems are more than likely to be suffering from a sensitive stomach. If your dog has one or more of these symptoms repeatedly, it is essential for you to change their diet to decrease the severity of these symptoms.

As an owner of a dog with a sensitive stomach, you may find it difficult to find the proper diet for your dog. Before you begin to change your dogs diet, it may be beneficial to bring your dog to a veterinarian to try to identity what foods or substances are causing your dog to get sick. If a particular ingredient is identified, then you should eliminate foods that contain that specific ingredient.

There are some brands that specifically make foods for sensitive stomachs. However, many owners prefer to make their own homemade dog food. You should try to avoid ingredients that your dog may have previously been exposed to. The idea behind using different ingredients in your homemade dog food is to minimize the chance that your dog could eat something it is allergic to. You can try ingredients such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, duck, venison, and other things not normally found in most dog food. Fish is another protein that is normally used in food for those with sensitive stomachs. Real salmon supplies omega-rich nutrition for sensitive stomachs. Other ingredients can include easily digestible rice, oatmeal, and antioxidant rich nutrition for your dogs immune system health. Homemade recipes for your dog also does not contain artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, artificial colorants, gluten or fillers

Other common ingredients in homemade dog food recipes include chicken, turkey meat, cottage cheese, sweet potato, oatmeal, etc. It is important to note that if you choose to feed your dog homemade food you must balance all the essential minerals and vitamins in the meal, along with protein, carbohydrates, fats, phosphorous and probiotics. For one commonly used recipe it requires 2 cups of rice, 1 pounds of chicken meat chunks, 1 cups of vegetable blend (excluding garlic and onions), and 4 cups of water. Once you have the ingredients ready, heat a large saucepan and add meat, vegetables, rice and water, and cook on a medium to low heat. Bring it to boil and stir occasionally. When the mixture is boiled, cover it and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, until all the ingredients, especially the rice, are well cooked.

After you select a diet for sensitive stomachs that you feel is best for your pet, make sure you track their digestive health. If you see that it is improving, then stick with the food you chose. If you do not see an improvement in your dogs digestive health, it is important to bring your dog to the veterinarian to determine a different course of action.
