Pampering Your Poodle - Family - Pets

A poodle is elegant and graceful, yet fun and energetic; they are some of the most loved dog breeds around the world. They are highly intelligent, obedient, they have a great personality and they have non-shedding hair, making them great house pets and excellent show dogs. A poodle can sometimes be timid and reserved when it comes to strangers, it can also be sensitive to sudden loud sounds and touches. However, with proper pampering and a lot of socialization in puppy hood, any poodle can become well rounded and well trained dog.

Bathing and regular grooming is essential when taking care of your poodle. They have a single layer hair that needs regular brushing to keep it from matting and debris from forming and causing parasites. This can also be a great bonding experience between you and your pet. There are different styles to cut and clip poodle hair, from the basic clip, the kennel clip to the more elaborate show clips. Aside from brushing and clipping the hair, regular tooth brushing keeps plaque from building up and prevent a host of diseases. Clipping of nails must be done regularly as well, long nails can damage your dogs feet if left to grow too long. There are dog salons, specializing in different dog breeds that can accommodate the special pampering needs of a poodle. Professional grooming can cost anywhere from $35 to $50 and should be done every one to two-months. Having this done can actually save you more expenses in the long run, by keeping your poodle healthy.

Being originally bred as a water retrieval hunting dog, a poodle needs a lot of playtime and exercise. A dog left alone and ignored can be prone to loneliness, separation anxiety and even aggression. Giving your poodle a daily walk, a short game of catch or even a few laps on a pool can help burn off excess energy, keeping him calm and pleasant at home.

Shopping is a great stress reliever for you, as well as your pet. Buy your pet chew toys, especially during puppy hood; this will keep him entertained while indoors. When picking out toys, ask the store if they can let your poodle inside so he can pick out his own toy. Putting clothing is also a great idea from keeping your poodle safe from the weather, but mostly this is done to accessorize. There is nothing more adorable than a cute toy poodle in a pink tutu and booties. Petco and PetSmart are great stores that carry a wide variety of pet approved and tested products that your poodle can enjoy.

The last and probably one of the most important things is choosing the right bedding for your poodle. After a whole day of activity, your poodle deserves a good nights sleep in a cozy warm bed. There are many bedding styles available, from regular dog mats, dog sofa to thermo-rugs. Some popular dog bedding brands are Coolaroo Pet Bed, Midwest Quiet Time Pet Beds and Bowsers.
