For many years my first cat absolutely loved to eat the crunchy commercial pet foods, even when I supplemented that with lots of fresh meat, fish, eggs, and cheese. So, I decided to find her the healthiest dry cat food on the market that I could find. There was one brand from Canada supported by the world's leading holistic veterinarians that had a lot of high quality natural ingredients and preservatives With delicious items like real chicken, chicken livers and fat, turkey, salmon and whitefish, eggs, alfalfa, kelp, and other fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs, this cat food's ingredients was like a gourmet degustation menu.
At that time, however, there were a number of laws requiring certain imported foods to be irradiated upon entry into the country. While both human and animal foods are irradiated, the pet foods are irradiated at levels 5-10x higher than safe human limits. This irradiation process ultimately makes the foods toxic, making it extremely poisonous for cats and other animals to consume. Cats eating these foods often develop various neurological diseases that are irreversible and very frequently fatal.
Unfortunately, my cat's diet consisted of about 40% of this gourmet dry food. Because of this, the irreversible neurological condition soon began to affect my own cat. Her hind legs started to become wobbly, it became difficult to swallow food, urinate, and defecate properly, and her weight declined dramatically. After a while, it was almost like she was a shell of her former active, happy self. Her veterinarian finally suggest I euthanize her, after all attempts at treatment failed.
Since then, I have become more passionate about ensuring pet owners provide their pets with the most natural and balanced diet possible for their pets. Although I will very rarely recommend a few acceptable commercial food brands, I most often advise my veterinary patients to give their pets real, home-prepared foods.
Despite what most of the research suggests, there are still many vets that discourage homemade pet foods and recommend "premium" processed dry foods as the better option. These commercial brands are creatively marketed as the healthiest diet options for your pet, even as the companies know this not to be true. An overwhelmingly amount of research shows a strong connection between a dramatic decline in our pets' overall health and the increasing use of those "premium" processed pet foods. Even with inadequate lifestyles, over-vaccination, and poor genetics, the primary cause of most pets' health problems are caused by inappropriate diets. Our pets are now regularly diagnosed with all sorts of conditions, from skin, teeth, and gum diseases, to diabetes, obesity, renal failure and anal gland blockages--all of which can be traced to improper nutrition. It should now be clear that an obscene number of our pets' health issues are directly attributable to the consumption of such mass-produced, processed pet foods.
If you want your pet to enjoy a long and healthy life, it is essential that you provide it with a balanced, natural diet made with fresh, real foods. I now prepare my pets' food myself using tasty, easy-to-prepare recipes with any number of the following ingredients: raw chicken necks or wings for cats, whole raw chicken carcasses for dogs, raw fish, raw organ meats from beef, lamb, and chicken, raw eggs, and also yogurts and cheeses. It is just as important to include fruits and vegetables, like broccoli, celery, beetroot, cauliflower, apple, pear, or pineapple. I will also add a range of vitamin and mineral supplements to their daily meals, as well. See cat food coupons. I make sure that all of the foods I use are organic, whenever possible, and are also of human-grade.
Ensuring your pet has a healthy diet can be quick and inexpensive, regardless of your lifestyle. See dog food coupons. Furthermore, you will feel good in knowing that your pets are getting sufficient nourishment that promotes rather than depletes optimal health and well-being.
