Natural Remedies For Dogs: Good Idea, Or A Waste Of Time? - Family - Pets

Today's canine companions are living longer and developing more health problems as a result. While it's great to have your best friend around for more years, caring for him or her as they age can become quite difficult and costly. Instead of medical procedures, a lot of pet owners are turning to natural remedies such as supplements, acupuncture, and more. But do these solutions really work, and if so, are they any less expensive than their medical counterparts? Yes and no.

Cost Varies By Treatment

"Natural remedy" describes an incredibly vast number of different treatments. It could mean anything from purchasing and feeding a dog health supplement to actually having your dog treated by a naturopathic expert. The difference in cost between these different treatments is extreme. Supplements, vitamins, and other such items tend to have a fairly minor cost. On the other hand, taking your canine in for massage, rehabilitation, acupuncture, and similar treatments can be pricy indeed. It's a question of how much you have to spend: for some, the more pricey treatments may simply be out of reach. But for many pet owners, when it comes to their companion's health, price isn't an object.

Practitioners Matter

Having someone who isn't skilled or experienced work on your pet is never worth it. Most people who do try natural remedies for dogs get recommendations for practitioners either through friends, through a vet office, or through some other highly reputable source. When you know someone who has had prior experience with a particular practitioner and whose pet has experienced health benefits as a result, it's a lot more likely to have a similar benefit for your dog.

Health products, like supplements and vitamins, are a slightly different situation. If one comes recommended from a vet or a friend, it's a lot easier to simply order that exact one online. Similarly, if you see it recommended on a national program you trust, it's easy to try it regardless of location.

Look For Proven Results

The field of studies on dog health treatments is always growing. An increasing number of natural remedies are being tested, and their effectiveness proven more and more every day. The majority of them are showing to be quite good, especially the vitamins, minerals, and other supplements.

It Usually Isn't A Bad Idea

When in doubt, check with your vet to see whether or not the suggested natural treatment can interfere with anything else you're doing for your pet. If not, it's usually worth a try. While some remedies may not work in some situations, if they work they often work very well, and cost a lot less than medical treatments which would be used in their place.
