Give Your Dog a Balanced Diet with the Right Dog Food - Family - Pets

So, you just got a dog, or perhaps have had one for some time already and are thinking about your faithful companion's nutrition for the first time. Standing in the pet store or looking at an online pet shop looking at cans and bags of dog food can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know just what you're looking for. In order to know just what you need, there are four things you need to consider; age, health, taste and budget.

A Dogs AgeThe first factor to consider is age. How old is your dog? If you have a puppy (up to five months old) you will require something specific to pups with a high nutrient density for their growing bodies. On average, for every three pounds of food eaten, there is one pound of growth. It should be noted, however, that a low nutrient density dog food is better for larger breeds, as growing too fast can lead to hip problems as they get older. Adult dogs are omnivores, and require a mix of four parts meat, five parts vegetables and one part carbs in their food to stay healthy.

Canine HealthThe next factor in choosing nutrition for your pet is health. Dogs have health problems that affect what they should eat, just like people do. Dogs with diabetes need to have the sugars and carbohydrates reduced, if not removed entirely from their diets. Cancer is unfortunate, but it is a factor. Dogs with cancer are healing on a massive level and require the right building blocks to do so. High concentrations of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids are just the tools for the job. In fact, denied these a cancerous dog will waste away while it's body gets what it needs from other things...like muscle and organ tissue. Allergies, and other digestive issues spring up all the time, and should be handled on a case by case basis.

Flavour If your dog won't eat it, there's probably a good reason that he or she simply can't communicate with you. It should be noted here that obesity is more likely to be a behavioural problem than a dietary one. In these instances, make sure Fido gets fewer table scraps and more exercise. Eating food designed for him or her is whats best.

BudgetThe final factor is budget. It's mighty tempting to purchase the cheapest thing the pet store carries just to save yourself a pound or two. Turn that bag over and look at the ingredients...notice the high meat content? Remember that only forty percent of your dog's diet is supposed to be meat. Don't worry, you won't need to break the bank to keep your dog healthy and happy, just as you don't need to keep yourself healthy. Dropping an extra few pounds annually on quality dog food will ensure your canine will be around for years to come to be ever so grateful for it.
